Why does my car make a squeaking/screeching sound when I turn on the air conditioning?

The most common causes for a screeching noise when you turn on the air conditioning is that your fan belt is loose, oil has spilled onto the fan belt, your compressor clutch or the entire compressor for your air conditioning is going out. Some of these possible causes can be easily fixed by almost any one and are worth a look. Remember for safety to make sure the car is always turned off and the keys are removed from the ignition before looking under the hood of a car.

The first thing to check is the fan belt. An oil spill on the fan belt can cause it to turn unevenly and slip, a good cleaning should fix that up. While checking for oil it is also easy to see if the belt is loose, give it a few tugs and see if it seems to give more than it should. If you have checked out the belt completely and the sound persist it is most likely the compressor. From this point on you should take your car into a professional, a new compressor can be expensive and there is no guarantee that it is what is causing the problem.
